Silage

Maize silage in airtight wrapped bales for dairy herds. Energy-rich feed that keeps milk up when grass runs out.

Silage is green maize chopped at the right stage and sealed away from air. It ferments and keeps for months, so a farm can store the season's feed for the dry months.

Dairy farmers use it to hold milk yields steady when pasture dries up. It is fed together with hay or other roughage and a dairy concentrate.

How to feed silage

01

Start small

Introduce silage over seven to ten days, beginning with a few kilos per cow.

02

Open only what you need

Once a wrapped bale is opened, air gets in. Use it within two or three days and keep the other bales sealed.

03

Feed with roughage

Give hay or dry fodder alongside silage so the animals chew the cud properly.

04

Throw out spoiled feed

Mouldy or slimy silage can make animals sick. Discard any that looks or smells wrong.

Questions

Silage: common questions

How much silage does a dairy cow eat?

It depends on the cow's size, yield and what else she eats. A common range for a cow on a mixed ration is about 15 to 25 kg of silage a day. Ask us and we will help you work out a weekly order.

How long does silage keep?

Sealed silage keeps for months. Once opened it begins to heat and spoil, so feed it within two to three days.

Can goats eat silage?

Yes, in moderation and introduced slowly. Goats do best with plenty of dry roughage alongside it.

Do you supply silage in bulk?

Yes. We supply a few wrapped bales for small farms and full lorry loads for larger herds and co-operatives.
